Quantum Chemistry Handouts
Molecular Symmetry Zoo - Appendix to Quantum Chemistry III
In the Quantum Chemistry III course, students learn about the symmetry of the geometrical structure of molecules. They learn that the symmetry of molecules is classified using point groups. In the class, students are asked to give examples of molecular species that belong to each point group, and we discuss together whether the molecule can be classified into that point group, so that students can deepen their understanding of molecular symmetry. New examples are added every year and a rich molecular zoo consisting of over 470 molecular species has been created. Through the many examples of molecules classified into the point groups, students can become familiar with molecular symmetry.
